Cavoodle puppies are almost too cute for words, but there is far more to these sweet dogs than good looks. Here is what future owners should know.
First, what is a Cavoodle?
Cavoodle puppies are the adorable offspring of a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a Poodle. That pairing brings together the best of both, with the Poodle’s intelligence and low shed coat and the Cavalier’s soft, affectionate nature, making for a very special companion.
They make the perfect family pet
Cavoodles are loyal, loving dogs, and their sweet, gentle nature makes them great around children. A lot of Australians choose one as their family dog for exactly that calm, easygoing temperament.
They are especially popular with families that have very young children. Being small, a Cavoodle is unlikely to knock a toddler over, and the child gets a friend to grow up with. They suit any size of household too, from a single person to a busy family, and while they may bond a little more with one person, they generally love everyone equally.
They come in Toy and Mini sizes
The difference between Toy and Mini Cavoodles comes down to the Poodle parent. Toy Cavoodles are bred from a Toy Poodle and are the smaller of the two, usually around 4 to 7kg, while Mini Cavoodles come from a Miniature Poodle and sit closer to 7 to 12kg. Beyond size, there is very little difference between them, and both make wonderful pets. Like any dog, both can inherit certain health conditions, so buying from a breeder who health tests their dogs is always the safest bet.
They come in a range of colours
One of the lovely things about Cavoodle puppies is the range of colours, from red and tan through to multi-coloured coats. Each one seems cuter than the last, which only makes choosing harder.
They do not need much space
A big plus of a small dog like a Cavoodle is that they do not need a huge yard to be happy. A small yard plus daily walks suits them fine, and since they would rather be close to you anyway, that works out nicely. Even though they are not a high-energy breed, a daily walk is still important to burn off any excess energy, and they love the new sights and smells of a trip to the local dog park.
They are smart dogs
Thanks to their Poodle heritage, Cavoodles are among the smarter breeds around. They will happily learn as many tricks as you care to teach them, which is great for keeping them entertained, and their intelligence means some go on to work as assistance dogs.
Their coats are easy to care for
One of the Cavoodle’s biggest drawcards is a low maintenance coat. It is generally easy to look after, and because it sheds so little, it tends to suit people with allergies better than many breeds, though no dog is completely allergen free. A brush and bath around once a week keeps it looking its best.
