How Much Do Cavoodles Bark?

Like any dog, Cavoodles bark to communicate. The real question is how much do Cavoodles bark, and what can you do if yours barks more than you would like?

Barking is how they communicate

Cavoodles bark when they are hungry, unsettled or simply bored. Part of being a Cavoodle owner is learning to read those barks so you can see to what your dog actually needs. Once you work out why they bark, you will usually see the barking settle right down. The catch is that it can turn into a habit, where your Cavoodle barks because it has learned that barking gets results.

Reinforcing it without meaning to

It is surprisingly easy to teach your Cavoodle to bark without realising it. Say your dog barks, you notice the food bowl is empty, and you fill it. After a few days your Cavoodle has joined the dots and starts barking at you well before dinner time. It is a small example, but this sort of thing happens all the time. The good news is that a bit of training is usually all it takes to break the habit.

How much do Cavoodles bark normally?

On the whole, a Cavoodle will not bark any more than the average dog. They are not howlers the way Beagles and other hunting breeds can be, which your neighbours will thank you for. They are not guard dogs either, though they will probably give a bark at an unfamiliar noise out on the street. You can train a dog to bark less, but no dog stays silent all the time, so do not expect miracles.

How to ease your Cavoodle's barking

If your Cavoodle barks for no clear reason and you are struggling to settle it, there are some simple training tricks that help. One of the best is redirecting the behaviour. Teach your Cavoodle to go and find a toy instead of barking, and more often than not they will get caught up in the hunt for the toy and forget whatever set them off. Our guide on training your Cavoodle has more on this.

Cavoodles are great learners

If you do need to train the barking down, you are in luck, because Cavoodles are quick learners. They are clever dogs and they pick up fast on when you would rather they stayed quiet. It might take a little time at first, but once the message lands the rest falls into place. Positive reinforcement and plenty of patience will get you there.

Cavoodles are generally quiet dogs

As barking dogs go, Cavoodles are one of the quieter breeds you can own. They would sooner have a nap than bark at everything going past the window, and they are among the friendliest dogs around too. If you are after a quiet, easygoing dog, the Cavoodle is hard to beat.

All up, Cavoodles are lovely, gentle dogs to have at home, and they will not bark the house down doing it.
