Cavoodles are a great choice if you are allergic to dogs, but that does not mean they are completely shed-free. Like any dog they do shed, so how much do Cavoodles shed on average?
It starts with the parents
Cavoodles shed about as much as their parents do. Cavoodles are born from a Poodle and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, so they inherit a mix of both coats. Poodles are known for a coat that sheds very little, which is what makes them such a good fit for allergy sufferers, and it means far less hair to clean up than you would get with a lot of breeds.
The Cavalier King Charles Spaniel has a longer coat and sheds a little more than the Poodle side. That makes for slightly more cleanup, but nothing dramatic. A grooming session might give you a few brushfuls of hair, no more than an average medium sized dog.
The best of both worlds
The Cavoodle draws on both parent coats, which gives them a lovely smooth coat that is also easy to look after. Thanks to the Poodle side, that coat does not shed much and is easy for most allergy sufferers to tolerate.
What about the Cavalier side?
A Cavoodle can lean towards either parent for its coat, but either way the shedding stays low. Whether your pup ends up with a soft curly coat or a longer silky one, it will not make a huge difference to how much they shed.
Shedding changes with the seasons
Just like us, your Cavoodle needs to manage their body temperature, so you may notice a bit more shedding in the warmer months than in winter, and a little more hair on the brush come summer. That is simply your dog blowing out their coat to stay cool. Most dogs carry a summer and a winter coat, and brushing them helps that seasonal change along.
So how much do Cavoodles shed?
Not much at all. With regular grooming you may find your Cavoodle sheds so little you barely notice, which is great news for allergy sufferers and anyone who likes a tidy house. Just because they shed so little though, do not let the brushing slide for too long.
Groom regularly for a happy pup
To keep shedding and stray hair to a minimum, brush and bathe your Cavoodle regularly to keep their coat in good health. That means no mats, no tangles and a gorgeous coat every day.
